n-Butanol is a primary alcohol with a molecular formula of C 4 H 10 O and a characteristic banana-like odour¹. It is a clear, colorless, mobile, neutral liquid that is miscible with many common solvents, but has limited miscibility with water¹². It is used as a solvent for coatings, lacquers, and enamels, and as a feedstock for syntheses and fermentation of sugars²³⁴⁵. It is very flammable, with a flashpoint of around 35° C¹. It can be produced by petrochemical processes or by fermentation of sugars derived from corn³.
