Butyl cellosolve is an ethylene glycol monobutyl ether that is a fast-evaporating solvent with a balance of hydrophilic and hydrophobic character123. It is used as an active solvent for solvent-based coatings, a coalescent for industrial water-based coatings, a coupling agent for architectural water-borne coatings, and a primary solvent in solvent-based silk screen printing inks12. It is also a chemical intermediate for butyl glycol acetate production and a component of hydraulic fluids, cutting oils, and oil dispersants45. It is compatible with a wide range of resin types and has 100% water solubility2. The paint industry uses 75% of the total butyl cellosolve production
